ArcBox IT Pro on Azure for Students: DSv5 quota unavailable in supported region

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to use ArcBox for IT Pros in an Azure for Students subscription for learning/testing, but I’m blocked by quota and VM-family availability.

What I’m seeing:

• Subscription type: Azure for Students
• Region tested: East US 2
• ArcBox flavor: IT Pros
• Total Regional vCPUs: 6
• Standard DSv5 Family vCPUs: 0
• In the Azure portal Quotas page, Standard DSv5 Family vCPUs shows unavailable / not available in this region for my subscription
• The quota troubleshooter suggests other VM families, but ArcBox IT Pro documentation says the default deployment requires 8 DSv5-series vCPUs

My question:

• Is ArcBox for IT Pros expected to work on Azure for Students subscriptions?
• If yes, is there a supported region or parameter change that avoids the DSv5-family blocker?
• If no, is there a smaller Jumpstart scenario recommended for students with limited quota?

What I already tried:

• Logged into Azure CLI successfully
• Selected the correct Azure for Students subscription
• Checked quotas in Azure CLI and Azure portal
• Confirmed the ArcBox IT Pro DSv5 requirement in the docs
• Did not submit quota requests for unrelated VM families

Unfortunately, ArcBox for IT Pros is not compatible with Azure for Students subscriptions due to the quota constraints. The ITPro flavor requires a Standard_D8s_v5 VM (8 vCPUs), and Azure for Students subscriptions typically have a total regional vCPU limit of 6 with no DSv5 family quota available. The VM size is currently hardcoded in the Bicep template and cannot be overridden via a parameter.

Here are some options to consider:

1. Request a quota increase — You can try submitting a support request through the Azure portal to increase your DSv5 family vCPU quota. However, quota increases on Azure for Students subscriptions may be limited or not supported.

2. Use a different subscription type — If you have access to a Pay-As-You-Go, Visual Studio (MSDN), or other subscription type, those typically come with higher default quotas or allow quota increase requests. Some organizations also provide Azure credits through programs like Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching.

3. Try a smaller scenario — If your goal is specifically to learn about Azure Arc-enabled servers, you could follow the individual Azure Arc-enabled servers Jumpstart scenarios which onboard individual VMs (from Azure, AWS, GCP, or on-premises) and don't require as many vCPUs. These are more modular and can work within tighter quota limits.
